Members of the Centre for Freedom of Media and Expression are atill under detention
In a few hours, the detainees of the Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM), will start their 115th day in prison. They were detained on Feb/16/2012, after members of the air force intelligence raided the center located on 29 Ayar Street in the center of the capital Damascus. On that date, 14 persons were detained from the center. The female detainees, Yara Badr, Razan Ghazawi, Thanaa Zaitani, Mayada Khalil and the visitor Hanadi Zahlout, were released 3 days later. They were arrested again on April/22/2012, and were transferred to the military court with 3 male detainees from the center: Ayham Ghazoul, Juan Farsou and Bassam Al-Ahmad. They stayed in Adra Prison for 20 days and were released on bail. The military judge asked the air force intelligence branch to bring the president of the center, Mazen Darwish, to attend the trial on May/25/2012. However, the air force intelligence ignored the judge's request. The trial was postponed until June/26/2012 to ensure Mazen Darwish's presence.
Leaks from former detainees state that the detainee Mazen Darwish was isolated from the rest of the center's detainees after 1 day of detention. He was detained in the corridor, with his eyes closed all the time. The blogger Hussein Ghuzair's health was deteriorating. He is already suffering from coronary heart disease. A few days ago, news about transferring Abdulrahman Hamada, Mansour Al-Amri and Hani Al-Zaitani from the fourth devision headquarter to an unknown place was reported. One of the detainees of the Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression tells the story of their detention from the beginning:
We stayed 28 days in the investigation branch in Mazzeh. We were not treated badly, or at least, we were not treated like others. We were not beaten or insulted, we were safe from the scary world that is called the torture world. We began a strike on the 29th day until the 33rd day of our detention. Then they decided to transfer us to the fourth devision headquarter.
There, we were welcomed with what is called "entry procedure" which includes beating, insults and torture. We were welcomed "like no one else was welcomed", as another detainee stated. Our screams were echoing everywhere. They filled their dark narrow corridors.
We were beaten on our backs and heads. "Some" were beaten by thick batons. A number of detainees described the batons differently. Some of them said it was made of hard rubber, and others said it was made of wood wrapped in thick leather. But the most accurate description, according to Abu Oday, " It is the feeling of a wall falling on your back".
Each of us was beaten around 20-30 times. We received a special treatment. "Take care of the intellectuals", this is what one of the members of Mazzeh branch who was with us told the rest.
Mansour and Hani told me that they were exposed to electrical shocks when they entered the branch. We were severely slapped on our faces. Mansour was also pushed on the stairs. He fell, and his knee was severely injured. This might leave permanent crippling effects of his movement in the future. Finally, The day was over.
The second day came, and we had what our colleagues promised us will happen. Another party was waiting for us. A torturer with whips came to us and asked for "newbies" to come. We went out, scared to death. We were beaten by whips on our feet, or as the security calls it "Doulab", then we went back.
On our third day, we were asked to prepare ourselves for medical examination. We were also exposed to electrical shocks. Another 5 or 6 days passed, and our promised day came. I will never forget that day. A month ago, we were newbies, but then we started to tell other detainees about the revolution and its achievements. A spy was among us, and told the security what must not be told.
In the evening an officer from the branch came, he ordered some of us to come with him: "Me and Hani and Abd and Jawan and Bassam". There we were brutally beaten, on our backs, our heads and our behinds. We were also exposed to electrical shocks. It was more painful than I can describe.
Our days included what is called by "formation of decks". As we received our food, two or more security agents entered the cell and we were forced to sit on our knees, lined up, touching each other at the wall. The agents then started giving electrical shocks to some of the prisoners in the last two lines. Then they ordered them to climb on the heads of their comrades in the front, and this is the worst. Some of us got shocked and others were trampled on their heads, while the torturers were just laughing.
