Israel bars disabled Palestinian athlete from joining teammates at pre-Olympics celebration (Associated Press) - 09-jun-2012

June 7, 2012 — Israel has barred a paralyzed Palestinian athlete who lives in Gaza from an Olympics celebration sponsored by the British government. Khamis Zakout says the British Consulate in Jerusalem invited him and five fellow athletes on the Palestinian para-Olympics team to a pre-Olympics celebration in Jerusalem and the West Bank city of Ramallah. He says he was the only one banned from attending...

The untold story of higher education for Palestinian students (Middle East Monitor) - 09-jun-2012

June 7, 2012 - The denial of unhindered access to education is one of the untold stories of the suffering of Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip and occupied West Bank. While thousands of students in higher education are delayed in attending lectures, or miss them altogether due to Israel's military checkpoints in the West Bank, their counterparts in Gaza are unable to register or travel to the same universities. In some cases, Gaza students have had their studies put on hold for more than 12 years because they have been denied access to the West Bank....

Israeli Abduction of Palestinian Theatre Director Condemned By IPSC (PNN-IPSC) - 08-jun-2012

June 7, 2012 - The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) condemned on Wednesday, 6th May, the detention of Nabil Al-Raee, the Artistic Director of the Jenin Freedom Theatre, by Israeli occupation forces in the West Bank. Martin O'Quigley, IPSC Chairperson said, "the IPSC condmens this act of cultural repression by the Israeli occupation forces. The Freedom Theatre is an internationally renowned and respected artistic company. In light of this, and previous similar attacks on the theatre, this abduction can only be seen as a targeted act of intimidation and harassment of Palestinian artists by Israel's apartheid regime"...

Israelis Stop Palestinians from Getting Drinking Water (WAFA) - 08-jun-2012

June 7, 2012 (WAFA) – Israeli forces Thursday seized a water tanker that was used to supply parts of the occupied Jordan Valley with drinking water and imposed a $450 fine on its owner, according to a local official. Free Mahmoud Sarsak: An Open Letter to Alistair Burt (Felicity Arbuthnot) - 08-jun-2012

June 7, 2012 - As Minister with responsibility for the Middle East and North Africa, the plight of Palestinians both held without trial, legal representation and on hunger strike in Israeli jails, is surely of deep concern to you. According to the New York based National Lawyers Guild, the whole basis of administrative detention: " ... is practiced by Israel in an unlawful way." They quote Human Rights Watch which states: "The idea that you can lock up hundreds of people at any given time and over the years hundreds and thousands without any due process rights, really turns human rights law on its head." (Executive Director, Heidi Boghosian, letter to Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, 21st May 2012.)...

Gaza kindergarten damaged in Israeli bombing raid (Missionary International Service News Agency) - 08-jun-2012

June 8, 2012 - "We are very surprised by what happened because the kindergarten was announced in Israel, in short, they know we’re there, we opened the facility on March 19″: thus said to MISNA the President of the NGO 'Wind of the Earth’, Massimo Annibale Rossi, which together with the Italian Cooperation and the Italian episcopal Conference (CEI), has funded and built the Umm al-Nasser kindergarten, damaged in an Israeli air raid last Saturday night. "The 'Children of Earth’ – the first children’s center in Gaza, which derives all its energy from solar panels – regularly hosts approximately 130 children between the ages of three and six, as well as organizing activities for the women of the Bedouin community next village," explained Massimo Annibale Rossi...

Reflections on a Bestial Culture, Ready and Eager for Slaughter (I) (Arthur Silber) - 08-jun-2012

June 7, 2012 - The New York Times published its lengthy article entitled "Secret 'Kill List' Proves a Test of Obama's Principles and Will" on May 29, 2012. Today, a mere nine days later, it has already vanished almost completely from national discussion. Even in the days immediately following the article's publication, the discussion that occurred was most notable for how limited it was and for how few people took part in it. I confess that I did not exhaustively research such commentary about the article as was offered, for it quickly became clear that many writers and observers said nothing at all about it or reacted as if nothing of unusual significance had occurred. Some writers vehemently criticized the program detailed in the article, but even they failed to note a number of aspects that I view as deserving particular attention...

Probing Obama’s secrecy games (Glenn Greenwald) - 08-jun-2012

June 7, 2012 - Over the past several months, including just last week, I’ve written numerous times about the two glaring contradictions that drive the Obama administration’s manipulative game-playing with its secrecy powers: (1) at the very same time that they wage an unprecedented war on whistleblowers, they themselves continuously leak national security secrets exclusively designed to glorify Obama purely for political gain; and (2) at the very same time they insist to federal courts that these programs are too secret even to confirm or deny their existence (thereby shielding them from judicial review or basic disclosure), they run around publicly boasting about their actions. Just over the past month alone, they have done precisely this by leaking key details about Obama’s commanding role in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, drone attacks that have killed allegedly key Al Qaeda figures, sophisticated cyber-attacks on Iran’s nuclear program, and the selection of targets for Obama "kill list": all programs that are classified and which the White House has insisted cannot be subjected to judicial review or any form of public scrutiny...

First the 'targeted killing' campaign, then the targeted propaganda campaign (Jameel Jaffer and Nathan Wessler) - 08-jun-2012

June 7, 2012 - A story in last week's New York Times painted a remarkably detailed picture of the US government's so-called "targeted killing" campaign, a campaign that involves the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) to kill suspected insurgents and terrorists and, it turns out, many, many others, as well. The story, written by Jo Becker and Scott Shane, discussed the CIA's choice of munitions, its efforts to avoid civilian casualties, and its method for calculating the number of civilians killed in any given strike. The story also underscored the extent to which President Obama himself is involved in overseeing the campaign – and even in selecting its targets. The story has already received a great deal of coverage, but two aspects of it deserve more attention...

Not on the Other Side of the Wall (By Ruth Fleishman) - 08-jun-2012

June 7, 2012 - 'Jerusalem Day' was celebrated this year, marking forty five years of occupation. About a third of the city's residents are excluded from the celebrations, speeches and promises that speak of: "(Jerusalem) forever and always…freedom of religion… equality…" and other such hollow catchphrases. In addition, and much more importantly, those same residents aren't granted their civil rights. Ever since the creation of the metropolis sphere called: "Greater Jerusalem", which is the result of the intention to annex as much territory as possible with as few residents as possible, the basic rights of three hundred and sixty thousand Palestinians living in it, are not recognized. The city that had stretched its body like a spring up to the end of its reach, extending to the outskirts of Ramallah, has left the Palestinians who reside within it discriminated against by the actual classification given to them...

June 7, 2012 - Despite the midday sun, Amin Khalaf and Ali al-Dous were happily and tirelessly harvesting wheat with the help of a large combine harvester on their land, just 500 meters away from Gaza’s boundary with Israel. The wheat yet to be harvested, and about 500 kgs of grain already gathered, shined like gold.Amin’s son, Ahmad Khalaf, 22, packed the grain into large white sacks, within view of an Israeli army watchtower overlooking the family’s farmland...

The coalition did not disclose any other information about the crash, but a senior U.S. defense official at the Pentagon said two American pilots were killed in the crash in Ghazni province. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose details of the crash, said there was indication of enemy activity in the area at the time. Hunger-striking soccer player briefly hospitalized (Ma'an news) - 08-jun-2012

June 7, 2012 -- Israeli authorities transferred a long-term Palestinian hunger-striker to hospital on Thursday after prison health officials expressed concern about his condition, an official said. Israeli Prison Service spokeswoman Sivan Weizman said Mahmoud al-Sarsak, who has been on hunger strike for 81 days, was taken to Assaf Harofeh Medical Center on Thursday afternoon. He was moved upon the advice of doctors at the prison clinic in Ramle who "thought he might need medical care," Weizman told Ma'an. However, the hospital decided he did not need to be admitted...

"Every third child in Gaza stunted by hunger": interview with renowned doctor Mads Gilbert (Sami Kishawi) - 08-jun-2012

June 7, 2012 - For many people around the world, Israel’s three-week attack on the Gaza Strip in late 2008 and early 2009 provided a stark glimpse of the reality that Palestinians endure on a regular basis. It was a scene straight from a horror film, a cause for concern and outrage. For others, including Norwegian physician Mads Gilbert, it was a call to action, beckoning solidarity workers back to Gaza’s pockmarked streets. Gilbert was all too familiar with the scene. A veteran anesthesiologist who had been deployed to help handle emergency medical situations in Palestine and in Lebanon, Gilbert instinctively made his way to Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital when the bombing began...

Libyan elections postponed amid mounting violence (By Jean Shaoul) - 08-jun-2012

June 7, 2012 -Libya’s ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) has postponed elections scheduled for June 19 amid continuing militia clashes, kidnappings and arrests. The elections are unlikely to be held before mid-July at the earliest. On Wednesday, the US Consulate in Benghazi came under bomb and grenade attack, although no one was injured. It was reportedly in retaliation for the killing of Libyan-born cleric Abu Yahya al-Libi by a US drone strike in Pakistan hours before. Earlier in the week, a brigade of al-Afwiya militiamen briefly took over the capital’s international airport in Tripoli and grounded all flights to pressure the NTC to release their leader, Abu Ajila al-Habshi...

US airstrike kills 18 Afghan civilians (By Bill Van Auken) - 08-jun-2012

June 7, 2012 -At least 18 Afghan civilians, including seven children, were killed early Wednesday morning after US special operations troops called in an air strike on their homes. The massacre provoked an angry demonstration in Pul-i-Alam, the capital of Logar province southeast of Kabul, where the strike took place. Afghanistan’s PAN news service reported that residents came to the capital carrying the shattered bodies of the dead, to prove that the victims were civilians...

Panetta: Drone attacks will continue in Pakistan (Associated Press) - 08-jun-2012

June 6, 2012 -NEW DELHI – Just two days after a drone strike killed al-Qaida's second-in-command, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta made it clear Wednesday that such attacks will continue as long as the U.S. needs to defend itself against terrorists that threaten America.Speaking in India — on Pakistan's doorstep — Panetta unapologetically dismissed suggestions that the strikes could violate Pakistan's sovereignty. "This is about our sovereignty as well," he said when answering questions from the audience after a speech at an Indian think tank...

Pakistan PM: Drones Violate Human Rights (Jason Ditz) - 08-jun-2012

June 6, 2012 - America’s drones strikes are a violation of human rights because innocent men, women, and children are being killed, Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Wednesday. Germany Financed Israel’s Race to Get Nukes and Now, Nuke-Armed Submarines (Richard Silverstein) - 08-jun-2012

June 6, 2012 - I’ve just read the full Der Spiegel expose on Germany’s arms deal with Israel which will eventually bring nine nuke-armed submarines into its naval arsenal. The report is so rich that it’s worth delving into it for a second blog post. In 2008, Angela Merkel, on her first visit to Israel made a remarkable and quite alarming statement: Here of all places I want to explicitly stress that every German Government and every German Chancellor before me has shouldered Germany’s special historical responsibility for Israel’s security. This historical responsibility is reason of state for my country. For me as German Chancellor, therefore, Israel’s security will never be open to negotiation....

Black Migrants in White Israel (Jemima Pierre) - 07-jun-2012

June 6, 2012 - The race riots in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem pointed up the virulently anti-Black nature of Israeli prejudice. Carrying sticks and stones, the crowds shouted "Blacks Out!" and "Infiltrators get out of our homes." A veteran reporter said only a strong police presence prevented lynchings. Some of the hate speech sounded quite "American" – such as the Interior Minister’s statement that Israel belongs to "the white man."

Military Resistance 10F6: More Arms and Legs (Thomas F Barton) - 07-jun-2012

June 6, 2012 - American troops are suffering more extensive physical damage — measured in lost arms and legs — to buried explosives in Afghanistan than ever before, according to data collected by the Army Surgeon General’s office. This year through May, 60% of all combat amputation casualties in Afghanistan — 31 of 52 cases — were troops who lost two, three or four limbs, according to statistics. The vast majority are caused by makeshift bombs known as improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, the Army says...

The ‘honest broker’ comes clean: Obama admits the US is ‘more attentive’ to Israel than Palestinians (Adam Horowitz) - 07-jun-2012

June 6, 2012 - On Tuesday, President Obama met with a delegation of leaders from the U.S. Orthodox Jewish community and told them he gives Israel more attention than the Palestinians, and that the window on the peace process has probably closed. Give him points for honesty. From Haaretz: U.S. President Barack Obama told a delegation of the U.S. Orthodox Jewish community at the White House on Tuesday that his administration is decidedly more attentive to Israel than it is to the Palestinians.

NYT: Drone Strikes 'Combat Militancy' by Increasing Militants (by Peter Hart, FAIR) - 07-jun-2012

June 6, 2012 - In today's New York Times article (6/6/12) about the apparent drone killing of Al-Qaeda "deputy leader" Abu Yahya al-Libi, Declan Walsh and Eric Schmitt write: If his death is borne out this time, it would be a milestone in a covert eight-year airstrike campaign that has infuriated Pakistani officials but that has remained one of the United States' most effective tools in combating militancy. That's revealing. It's inarguable that the drones kill people the U.S. government wants to kill, and some it doesn't intend to kill. But does this really qualify as "combating militancy"? In Yemen, the increase in drone attacks has resulted in a doubling of the ranks of the local branch on Al-Qaeda. Some would-be attackers reportedly cite the drone attacks on civilians as motivation to attack the United States...
